A Taste for Wild Game

I've been reading through An Old Testament Theology by Bruce Waltke, and as I've been reading there are quite a few things that the Holy Spirit has convicted me of. In particular, the item I would like to discuss is Isaac and his taste for wild game. If you have not read the section in Genesis talking about Isaac, Here is a link to it on biblegateway. Now what caught my attention when reading Waltke that I had never considered before was when he said that "[In regard to verse 25:28] A literal translation of this verse produces a clear causal connection between Isaac's love and his sensual appetites: 'Isaac loved Esau because of the game in his mouth!" What Waltke says there is something I had never thought about before. I had always assumed it was because Esau was Isaac's first born and technically speaking the first born is the one who gets the birthright (more on this later). What Waltke says, is that Isaac wanted to bless Esau because he fed his stomach good food. Isaac was willing to sell God's whole redemptive plan down the river for a steak (equivalent of). I can't even begin to tell you how much the idea of that scares me. Instead of letting God be the lens through which he viewed the world, thus seeing that Jacob cared more about the birthright and what it stood for; instead he was viewing the world through the lens of "sensual appetites." This is something that happens to all of us, but do we ever see so clearly how it affects those around us as we do in this story? It causes Isaac's family to disintigrate. All because of his stomach. Brothers, sisters, let us examine ourselves to see where our appetites are causing chaos to breed instead of Christ-likeness. May God show us more grace than he showed Isaac in allowing us to repent of those idols and to come back to wholeness at the feet of Christ.
